04-06 GTO Short Throw Shifter

Comparable to the very popular GMM Race but for half the price, very reasonable for those who are looking for an affordable replacement for the sloppy stock shifter. I have been daily driving my goat for 5 years now and never quite understood why there was so much hatred for the stock shifter until I installed this. It's been over a month and I have yet to miss a shift. I was concerned there would be noise and vibration but I have absolutely none. Very tight shift pattern, just slightly tap the handle to the left and up and you're good to go. A must have.

Pros:
*Shorter handle, brings the shift knob down roughly an inch to a much more comfortable level.
*Tight shift pattern.
*No more hitting a wall when shifting into 3rd.
*No rattling or excessive vibration.
*PRICE

Cons:
*Does not accept aftermarket shift knobs if that's your thing.
*Threw away the gasket and used RTV sealant.

I grew up banging gears with a Hurst pistol grip and Muncie 4sp in my 58 P/U so I really didn't mind the GTO shifter that much. I was used to the longer throw and the slight wander of the shift gate that the GTO had. But, WOW!, this shifter that GTO8TA has put out is like night and day for this car. The shifter has a very short throw, tight shift gate or pattern and a feel that is incredibly solid. It wouldn't surprise me if it didn't knock a tenth or so off the strip ET. One of the other pro's I like about the shifter is that I could keep the stock shifter knob, I like keeping the stock look of the shifter console. While there was no instruction manual for the shifter it wasn't that bad of an installation, the only thing I would note is that the lower right hand mounting bolt really needs a little more clearancing during the machining process. All and all, the shifter is well made, the machining is cleanly done, the function is awesome, the price is very good and it still looks stock!! What more could you ask for?

Been running this shifter for about 6mo now. I have been very pleased with its operation thus far. It was very easy to cut off the knob end and drill and tap 2 holes to allow me to use the Hurst stick and ball that I was running. Perhaps this should be an option?

My only complaint so far has been that the upper bolt hole which attaches the chromate colored handle to the base is oversized. However, I believe I have finally gotten the right combination of roughing up the mating surfaces, loctite, and machanically locking fasteners to prevent this from loosening and allowing the handle to rotate that little bit around the bottom bolt. Why with today's machining tolerances is such an oversize required?

All said though at this price point I would gladly purchase again as everything else about the shifter has worked perfectly.

Was very skeptical about buying this shifter because of the price alone. A bit time consuming to install. I ended up using the hex head bolt supplied for the shifter lever for the front bolts on shifter instead of the difficult to reach allen bolts the factory installed. made install much easier. Firm Notchy shifting. my 1-2 gear issue is gone and third gear is a breeze. Thing shifts SOOO much better. LOVE IT!!

Had this a couple years now and I still love it... much better than the limp nuddel these cars come with.. only thing is I wish was different is the handle for the shift knob, should have one to take a spin on aftermarket shift knob

I didn't understand why everyone hated the stock shifter until i got this one, it is a night and day difference. its very notchy and tight. it takes some getting used to but you will never miss third gear again. and you cant beat the price especially for the quality.

Feels like a new car! Product is tight and feels great. Much easier getting it into reverse (a little finicky on stock). Was a little tough to get the rear right bolt in due to the overlay of metal and to tighten because of it but with a little work it went in great!

Shifter definitely shifts alot better than the stock one. You can really feel the difference in the short shifter than with the stock. I was really sceptical at first but I am satisfied with the product.

I had a better chance of hitting the lottery than finding third gear (under load) before installing this shifter. Also had intermittent difficulty with a simple 1-2 (not under load) shift that is gone. The price is right and I wanted to keep a stock look, thumbs up.
